Nagaland governor, P.B. Acharya has released the book titled “Economic History of the Miris” (Mishings) on Sunday in the GU-IST Hall of Gauhati University.

According to PRO to Governor, the book authored by Peter Pegu, is the result of an in-depth study of the various stages of economic life of the Mishing tribe over the last 3000 years.

Addressing the gathering, Acharya stressed upon the need of social connectivity in any intellectual work. 

He appealed to the authors and researchers to make meaningful contributions to the national character building through their intellectual works.

Highlighting the significance of “Economic History of the Miris”, Acharya stressed on the quality content of the book, rather than spelling or name of the tribe.

On the occasion, Prof. Mridul Hazarika, Vice Chancellor of Gauhati University, expressed his satisfaction on the book being released at Gauhati University that conducts a number of academic activities on the language and culture of various ethnics groups of North-Eastern region including the Mishings. He hoped that “Economic History of the Miris” will be immensely beneficial for the researchers working in relevant topics.

S. S. Pegu, chairman of Ruwad Educational Trust, enumerated the contents of the book and highlighted the efforts of the author in collecting and compiling the rare data used in the book. 

Also speaking in the event, Prof. Nani Gopal Mahanta, Registrar of Gauhati University, said the book will go in as a glittering stone on to the mosaic of Assam’s intellectual world. 

Brig. (Retd.) Abani Pait expressed satisfaction and appreciation to the author of the book for recording the otherwise forgotten aspects of the Mishing tribe like their economy-related practices over the millennia. Earlier, the author of the book Peter Pegu gave an overview of the book while Dr, Rajeev Coley conducted the ceremony as the compere.
