12 villages under Pughoboto infested by FAW

Twelve villages under Pughoboto sub-division has been reported to be infested by fall armyworm (FAW). 

According to DIPR, as per the verification report provided by SDAO Pughoboto, Myanthung Patton, most of the villages were under severe infestation while some seem to be moderate. 

The department has started intervention as soon as the incident was reported by the farmers by imparting training and providing inputs like bio control (Metarhizium anisopliae), Emamectin benzoate and sprayers. 

Farmers have been advised to handpick larvae and destroy egg mass manually. 

The department is monitoring and supervising round the clock to control further spreading.

Meanwhile, ATMA Ongpangkong North block Mokokchung conducted a one-day training programme on management of Fall Army Worm (FAW) in Moalenden village Mokokchung on May 21. A press release from ATMA Mokokchung stated that, participants from Chubayimkum and Meyilong villages also attended the training. 

Rongsennungla Imchen DPD, ATMA Mokokchung as resource person, highlighted on the history of the pest, mode of identification, preventive and control measures for protection against the pest.   

Similar programme was also organized by ATMA Tseminyu block under Kohima district at Thongsunyu village on May 13 on the topic integrated pest management (Fall Army Worm) where assistant technology manager (ATM) Chunlikha block, Kebegi Kent was the resource person. 

She demonstrated on how to use locally available botanical pesticides for FAW management.  Altogether nine farmers attended the demo followed by farm inspection.

ATMA Peren block also conducted training on May 17 at Heingkunglwa village, Peren on the topic “Awareness and Management of Fall Armyworm (FAW)” with Otto S Awomi professional, AICRP Neonicotinoids as the resource person.  

The farmers were apprised on the identification of pest and its host ranges, life cycle of FAW and the potential damage of the pest. 

Kewichamsi Kaurinta (ATM) demonstrated on use of organic and chemical insecticides. Practical demonstration on seed treatment using bio-fertilizer was carried out by Mapeuheile Ndang (agri officer & convenor).  Altogether, 37 farmers attended the programme chaired by Alongba Jamir (BTM).
