19th All Sumi Chess C’ship begins

The 19th All Sumi Chess Championship, organised by Sumi Chess Association Nagaland (SCAN), got underway Tuesday  at Tourist Lodge. The competition will conclude on October 31. 

Delivering the presidential address at the opening programme, Ikiho Rochill, president, SCAN said that the competition was organised to encourage and promote the game of chess as a means to improve concentration level. 

Comparing the game of chess to one’s personal life, he urged the participants to be very careful of the decisions ‘we take in our day to day life’s, just like every move in a game of chess was important’. 

He also maintained that the 19th edition was focused on players under 17 and under 14 categories. He also encouraged the participants to make new friendship through the game of chess. 

Rev. Dr. Joshua Rochill, director and senior pastor, UMC Dimapur, offered the invocation and declared the 19th All Sumi Chess Championship open. 

The competition will witness around 40 to 50 participants from all over the state, under the categories of under 14,under 17 and open category. 

The winners will walk away with trophies and cash prizes of Rs. 20,000, Rs. 10,000 and Rs. 6,000 for winner, runner up and second runner up, respectively.  

Chief arbiter for the competition, Mughaho Awomi, is an international rated chess player, who had won FIDE Rating Chess Tournament in the year 2010, 2011 and 2014. He also represented India in the 24th Abu Dhabi International Chess Festival held in 2017. Currently,  he ranks 1196 in the national level and 70,925 in the international level.
