1st Aphuyemi Cup kicks off

The 1st Aphuyemi Cup (Football) kick started Tuesday at Pughoboto local ground with president of Sumi Games and Sports Association, Akihito Zhimo as the chief invitee.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Akihito recalled some of the renowned sportspersons from Pughoboto area who brought laurels to the Sumi community and Nagas as well. He encouraged the young sportspersons to draw inspiration from such players and achieve excellence through hard work, patience, discipline and determination.

Akihito also advised the players to desist from indulging in intoxicants saying “you may be a good sportsperson but if you forget how to take care of your body and health by using intoxicants and substances harmful to your body, then your performance will decline.”

He also urged players to let God be at the forefront in all their endeavours. “You can excel if you have perseverance and work hard with determination,” said the chief invitee. 

While calling upon the leaders of Pughoboto area to encourage the upcoming talents in their area, Akihito also appealed the people of Pughoboto area to extend their cooperation towards the Sumi Games and Sports Association.

The 1st Aphuyemi Cup is being organized by Aphuyemi Football Club (AFC) and will culminate on April 26.

The inaugural programme was chaired by AFC organizing secretary, Anguvito Shohe and invocation was pronounced by Rev Akhato L. Achumi, pastor, Pughoboto Town Baptist Church. Welcome address was delivered by Hokiqhe Sheqi, president, Sumi Aphuyemi Games and Sports Association. Presidential address was delivered by Shiyeto Wotsa, president, AFC.

Altogether, 9 teams are participating in the cup.  In the first match, Natsumi FC beat Elite Brothers Club Ghokimi 3-0 while Pughoboto Town FC beat Spireties FC 2-1 in the second match.
