The first Inter Government College Olympic 2019, organised by department of Higher Education and hosted by Kohima College, kick started Thursday in Kohima.

The event is being organised the theme “Bridging the Gaps.” Addressing at the inaugural function as chief patron, Temjen Imna Along, minister, Higher and Technical Education termed the day as historic. Many more Olympics will come and go but the first participants of the first Olympic and all the people involved in organising the event shall always be etched in the memory of the state government and the department, said the chief patron.

Along said the future of the students shall be determined by excellence of their sportsmanship, discipline, handwork and attitude towards the game.

While reminding that students are the future of the state, Along said, ‘the circumstances in which we live today is just the foundation’ for a stronger future.

Dr. Neikiesalie (Nicky) Kire, advisor, Rural Development in his brief speech said that sports and skill development are equally important and urged the youths to identify their talents/skills and to stay focused in their particular field and pursue it. Asserting that government job has reached saturation point, Kire said youths must not only see for government services but must go out and explore and bring new opportunities in the state.

Kire also opined that the event must be held in other districts as well to encourage the students to interact with others from different districts. The advisor advocated to remember the three ‘Ds’ in mind: Dedication, Determination and Discipline which will help them to shine and prosper in their future.

Dr. Watijungshi, additional director of Higher and Technical Education delivered the welcome address. Altogether over 700 students from13 colleges are taking part in the event.

Host of senior government officials, HoDs, principals of various colleges and others attended the inaugural programme.
