While four states of North East region— Nagaland, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram— are COVID-19 free, fresh cases of coronavirus were reported in Assam, Manipur, Tripura and Meghalaya on Wednesday.

According to report, 31 new COVID-19 cases were reported in Assam on Wednesday taking the tally to 188. Eighteen cases were reported Wednesday night, all from quarantine centres, while 13 were reported earlier in the evening, said Assam health minister  Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Out of the total 188 positive cases, 133 are active, four have died, three migrated, and 48 were cured and released from the hospital, he said.

MANIPUR: Tally of infections rose to 23 in Manipur after 16 people who recently returned from Chennai, Delhi and Guwahati tested positive for the novel coronavirus on Wednesday.

According to a statement issued by the state’s COVID-19 Common Control Room, among those infected are a woman and her 23-day-old son. Fourteen of those who tested positive on Wednesday hailed from Churachandpur district and returned from Chennai recently. Another person from Churachandpur district who recently returned from Delhi also tested positive for COVID-19.

Another who tested positive is a Guwahati returnee and hails from Imphal East district.

Three symptomatic cases from District Hospital Churachandpur have now been admitted to the COVID-19 care facility at the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) in the state capital, the statement said. The Chennai returnees were part of stranded Manipuris numbering around 1,140 who were evacuated and in a ‘Shramik Special’ train. 

MEGHALAYA: A man, who returned from Chennai, has tested positive for COVID-19 in Meghalaya, chief minister conrad K Sangma has said. The Chennai returnee coronavirus patient has been admitted at a COVID-19 hospital in the Garo Hills, the CM said.

With the new case, the number of COVID-19 cases in the state has risen to 14 but the Chennai returnee is the only active case in the state at present as 12 people have recovered from coronavirus and one has died.

Meanwhile, two persons who attended the Tablighi Jamaat congregation in Delhi have arrived here, according to district officials. Both have been sent for home quarantine after medical screening, the official said.

TRIPURA: Four more persons tested positive for COVID-19 in Tripura, taking the total number of cases in the state to 173, Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb said.

He said the four persons who tested positive for COVID-19 had recently returned from Chennai and are now under treatment. “850 samples have been tested for #COVID19 today and among them 4 persons found positive,” Deb tweeted on Tuesday.

Tripura Minister Ratan Lal Nath on Tuesday claimed that the state has the highest recovery rate of coronavirus patients in the country. Tripura’s recovery rate is 68.83 per cent while the national average recovery rate is 39 per cent, he claimed.

Meanwhile, there is a danger of quarantine facilities in the country emerging as breeding grounds of COVID-19 and other contagious diseases. 

Of the positive cases so far, majority of them have come from different States. Several thousand people have returned to their respective states from places.
