3 AR jawans killed in joint militant attack in Manipur

At least three jawans of Assam Rifles were killed and five others wounded in an ambush carried out by rebels in the restive state of Manipur on Wednesday night, official sources here said on Thursday.

The ambush was laid by a joint team of Manipur Naga People’s Front (MNPF), Revolutionary People’s Front (RPF) and United Liberation Front of Asom – Independent (ULFA-I), according to a joint statement of the three rebel groups.

It was reported that the joint team laid the ambush to a column of 4 Assam Rifles on area domination at Khongtal village in Manipur’s Chandel district bordering Myanmar Wednesday night, around 8.30 p.m., close to the Indo-Myanmar border. The rebels attacked the jawans by detonating an improvised explosive device (IED) first and then opened fired at troopers with sophisticated arms.

The sources said that the three AR personnel were killed on the spot. The deceased were later identified as Havildar (general duty) Pranay Kalita (No. 412160), rifleman Ratan Salam (Rfn no. 5009574) and rifleman Methna Konyak (Rfn no. 5005839).

Three rebel groups while owning up the ambush, in a joint statement, claimed that four troopers were killed and many others wounded in the attack.

Wednesday’s ambush was the second attack on 4 Assam Rifles based in Khongtal village.
