32 schools to take part in Kohima inter-school football tournament

The 3rd edition of Kohima District Inter School Football Tournament will be held from June 27 to July 15 at IG Stadium, Kohima. Altogether 32 schools from Kohima district will vie for the coveted title.

The three-week long tournament is being jointly organised by Royal Club Kohima, Department of School Education and Youth Resources & Sports under the theme “Fair Play Is My Game”.

The champions will receive a cash prize of Rs. 70,000 while the runners-up will pocket Rs. 50, 000. The two losing semi-finalists will receive Rs 20,000 each. 

The other awards include best discipline team, best cheering team and player of the tournament. 

Senior member of the Royal Club Kohima, Theja-o Vihienuo briefing media persons on Tuesday said promoting the game of football in Nagaland was the main objective behind organising the tournament. 

With this aim, the club has started inter-school level football tournament for development of football at the grassroot level.

While appreciating the government for laying the astro turf ground at IG Stadium, he said that it was a positive sign indicating the intention to take sports to greater heights. 

He added the club is thinking to organise inter-school district football tournament and hoped the tournament will grow.  

The astro turf ground will give players confidence, said Vihienuoand expressed hope that schools will take more initiative by giving exposure to the footballer outside the state.

The tournament will be played on knockout basis and the first match will be played between G Rio Higher Secondary School and St Joseph Higher Secondary School, Viswema at 1 pm on Thursday. The second match at 2:40 pm will be played between Baptist Mission School, Jotsoma and Stella Higher Secondary School.
