34th AASA meet underway

The 34th annual session of Ato Area Sports Association (AASA) commenced on Monday at Toshiho village under the theme, ‘Unity through Sports’. 

Howoto Jakhalu, class-I contractor, who graced the inaugural function as the chief guest, unfurled the association flag and declared open the 34th GB’s Football Trophy, 31st Lt. Nikhekhu & Lt. N.Yihoto Zhimo Memorial Men & Women Volley Ball Trophy and 6th Lt. Shekuto Süü Memorial Men & Women Badminton Trophy. 

Stating that sports is the best profession in the world, the chief guest outlined the social, economic, health and mental benefits which sports can bring into the community and in the life of an individual. 

He lauded the AASA officials both past and present for their effort for having being able to hold such event that promote not only the talented youngsters of Ato area. 

Highlighting the success and achievements of women boxing icon Mary Kom and how she rose from nothing to international fame, Howoto was of the view “why can’t Nagas attain fame and glory in the field of sports like the boxing star of Manipur as Nagas are second to none and there is no dearth of talent among the Nagas.” He also reminded the gathering that success comes through hard work only. 

The chief guest and his entourage were accorded a warm reception with cultural songs and dances by Ato area people. 

Rev. Luhevi, pastor of Nihokhu Baptist Church said the inaugural prayer for the event. Head GB of the host village, Hovito Zhimo welcomed the dignitaries and participating teams. Hozheto GB, AAGBA proposed the vote of thanks.
