With the theme, “Intensifying the fight for health and rights”, the 36th international AIDS candlelight memorial was held at KNP+, Kohima on Sunday.

Speaking on the occasion, NNP president Lanu said that the day is observed every third Sunday in May to commemorate those, who have lost their life to HIV.

The day is also marked to raise social consciousness about HIV and AIDS, break down barriers of stigma and discrimination and giving hope to new generation. He said that millions of lives have been lost and close to 37 million people were currently living with the HIV.

He further said that the day is observed to acknowledge and provide a safe space for PLHIV, and to honour, support and advocate for those who have been affected by the global HIV epidemic and to reflect on the work needed in combating AIDS epidemic. He also stressed that “we” were at the crossroads of a turbulent yet transformational time in the global AIDS, health and development sectors with multifaceted political and financial challenges affecting the strength and sustainability of networks of PLHIV and the key population around the world.

He pointed out that at this crucial stage in the fight against HIV/AIDS, support for PLHIV is slowly on the decline, and there is frequent stock out and shortage of ARV drugs causing mental stress and trauma to the PLHIV.

Therefore, he said that the time has come when “we” must again revitalize the movement and urged upon everyone to join hands and work together for a better tomorrow.

Earlier, programme began with invocation by Aching and a song was performed by the Cradle Ridge and Kezivinuo Sogutsu. Chakhesang Baptist Church, Kitsubozou pastor Vezopa shared a short message followed by minute of silence and lightening of candles.
