3rd Kohima Football League kicks off

Seyie Auto Maruti Suzuki 3rd Kohima Football League 2019, organised by Kohima Town Club, kicked off Saturday at IG Stadium, Kohima.

In the first match, defending champions Sechü Zubza FC showed their class as they thrashed Khriekesa FC 7-0. Gideon Leo and skipper Rhitsho Mero scored two goals each while Mhalelhoulie, Shürhosul Zhotso and Disingam Gangmei scored a goal each. 

Khriekesa FC started off to a bright start but failed to threaten the opponent’s keeper as they dominated the midfield area in the first quarter. 

Sechü Zubza made a slow start but gradually got into the game, with Disingam Gangmei hitting the crossbar in the 20th minute. 

Shürhosül Zhotso scored the first goal in the 28th minute after Zeaneikho Miasalhou seized a loose ball and passed the ball into his path. Zhotso made no mistake and tapped into the net.

Stephen Rutsa scored the second goal through a long range in the 36th minute to give the team two lead in the first half.

In the one-sided second half, Rhitsho Mero scored the third goal in the 48th minute. After 7 minutes, Disingam Gangmei also got his name in the scoresheet to make it 4-0 Substitute Gideon Leo, who replaced Zhotso, scored in the 66th minute and 71st minute.

Sechü Zubza captain Mero finished the game in the 75th minute by scoring his second goal to make it 7-0.

Meanwhile former Aizawl FC player Khwetelhi Thopi scored a hat-trick as Forerunners FC blanked United 16 FC 5-0 in the second match. 

Vekhruto Resu opened the scoring for Forerunners FC in the 24th minute from a rebound and Thopi added the second goal for the team in the 32nd minute. 

In the second half, Keneiguzo Seletsu found the net in 49th minute, while Thopi went on score in the 53rd and 85th minute to become the first hat-trick scorer of the 3rd edition. 

United FC 16 strikers failed to make much impact in the game and should have blamed themselves for not scoring any goals despite the opportunities that came their way. 

This edition, the champions will receive a cash prize of Rs 1,20,000 along with running trophy and citations while the runners-up will pocket Rs 80,000.

Earlier, speaking at the opening ceremony, Er. Zale Neikha, advisor of department of Youth Resources and Sports announced that the government will soon be laying another astro-turf at Dimapur to elevate the sportspersons and equip the state with more standard football ground. 

The present government is trying its best to develop sports infrastructure and provide adequate facilities to promote, train and enable sportsperson to compete with the rest of the country, said Neikha. He also lauded the club for taking the initiative to organise and bring young talents to compete with one another.
