40% of diarrhoea in children due to RV

DPO UIP/RCH, Dr. Khelito Zhimomi said that Rotavirus (RV) was responsible for nearly 40 percent of moderate to severe diarrhoea in children below five years, leading to 8.75 lakh hospitalization, 32.7 lakh outpatient visits and 78,000 deaths annually. 

A press release from district media officer stated that Dr. Khelito said this while delivering key note address at the meeting of District Task Force (DTF) for immunization of Wokha district held at DC’s office on July 16. 

She also informed the stakeholders on the various programmes initiated for the introduction of Rotavirus Vaccine (RVV).  

She said that the state was preparing to launch the vaccine during end of July, which will be given at six weeks, ten weeks and 14 weeks. Regarding activities carried out in June and July to introduce RVV, Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Wokha, Dr. Robin Lotha informed the stakeholders that district level training of all medical officers and programme officers, block level training for frontline workers i.e ANMs, ASHAs, AWWs and campaigns at village level during village health nutrition day were conducted. 

He urged the stakeholders to support the medical department during the launch of RVV.

The meeting was chaired by DC, Dr. Manazir J. Samoon, who is also chairman of DTF for immunization, Wokha. He stressed on the importance of village health nutrition day in disseminating information on Rotavirus vaccine. He also informed that a district health society meeting will be held on August 5. 

The meeting was attended by Lotha Eloe Hoho, Muslim Union leaders, church leaders, RMO 28 Assam Rifles, deputy CMO, DPM, media officer, senior supervisor ICDS and DIPR officials.
