Fashion designer Atsu Sekhose presented a collection inspired by the culture of northeastern India on the opening day of the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (WIFW) spring/summer in the capital Saturday.

Having his roots in Nagaland, the designer was chosen to showcase his collection as an effort to promote the region’s designs. The initiative was a collaboration between the Ministry of Textiles and WIFW.

“It’s great to be the part of such shows. Talking about collection, each and every detail has ben well examined and rejuvenates the beauty, style, art, craft, music and richness of northeast,” said Sekhose.

The designer showcased a collection dominated by Naga fabrics like cotton and silk, woven by 30 underprivileged women from a women’s weaving organization – Vitole and Assamese Silk exclusively woven by Assamese weavers.

The collection ranges from shorts, trench jackets, trousers and shirts in shades of reds, cobalt blue, off white and beige married to black.
“I wanted to signifty modernity using fabrics of all the states together. I wanted to give north eastern designs, more prominence. The collection is modern and one can wear it in any part of the world,” said Sekhose.

“Some of the new innovation that I tried is to make the collection wearable. North-Eastern textiles are basically comprised of thick woolen shawls so I have made it a little lighter by blending it into cotton silk,” he added.
