A young David Beckham fan got the surprise of a lifetime when he got to meet his hero while out shopping with his mother at Westfield.

Christian Lewis and his mother Elaine were asked to step into a photo booth to have a snap taken showing their support for the Olympics while shopping at Westfield in Stratford City just a stone’s throw from the Olympic Park.

But as the pair posed up ready for their photo, a head popped his face round the corner of the booth, asking if he could join in. Christian burst into tears when he realised it was his idol Beckham who gave him a hug as his stunned mother looked on.

Elaine said: ‘Its his hero. David Beckham just showed his face round the corner of the booth and said ‘can I jump in?’ ‘My son started crying and it made me start crying to o. It was absolutely amazing.’

The trick was played on 60 members of the public who were posing at a photo booth in Westfield Stratford City shopping centre as part of the Take The Stage campaign run by Adidas.

Former England skipper and LA Galaxy player Beckham, who was hiding in a secret section of the booth, said: ‘It was a unique experience for me and the people who took part and there were some great reactions when we surprised them in the photo booth.

‘I always love coming back to London and the activity was a great opportunity for me to get involved in the adidas Take The Stage campaign and get behind Team GB.’

Zuleika Butler turned a solo thumbs-up in to a cuddle with Beckham when she came face-to-face with the footballer while Raymond Mfon and Paul Fagbuaro could not believe their eyes when Beckham strode in to view.

Friends Emma Nwofar, Bonite Cattle and Kara Aretha Graham giggled in disbelief when he suddenly appeared as they posed for their photo.

As well as having their pictures taken with the football star, the lucky shoppers also got to quiz him on a range of subjects from his future plans to why he loves pie and mash.
