Normal work at Sekmai LPG Bottling Plant was disrupted Monday as drivers of LPG laden trucks suspended transportation of refilled LPG cylinders and staged a protest in front of the Plant.
Drivers protested against inclusion of rejected cylinders while loading empty cylinders into their vehicles for collection of refilled LPG cylinders from bottling plants in Assam.
IOC authority in Imphal collects refilled LPG cylinders from bottling plants in Assam to cope up with the shortfall demands in the state.
“Officials of Sekmai Bottling Plant mix the ejected LPGs while loading into the trucks on contract for transportation of refilled cylinders from the bottling plants in Assam and at the time of unloading it, drivers are penalized for causing damage to the cylinders”, protesting drivers alleged.
Drivers claimed that checking at each and every cylinder was not conducted while uploading the empty cylinders. However, at the time of unloading refilled cylinders, authority of the bottling plants conduct thorough checking and single out defect cylinders and penalize them for causing damage, they added.
The bottling plant had recently auctioned over 816 rejected cylinders to an individual took which was then re-sold to the bottling after they were repaired.
At the time of auction, the mandatory process of crunching to flatten the cylinder into unusable state was not done, the drivers rued.
The drivers agitated under the banner of the Assam Petroleum Majdoor Union who are hired on contract by Sekmai Bottling Plant.
