Minor gang raped; tension surfaces in Imphal east

A 14-year-old was gang-raped by five youth in Keirao village of Imphal East district on Friday night after the victim was kidnapped.
Situation in and around Keirao areas was tensed as political enmity was suspected behind the kidnapping and raping of the girl. The elder brother of the victim is an active of worker of the sitting MLA Md Allaudddin who is also minister in SPF government and family as well as locals suspected rapists to be workers of a former militant turned politician.
Police registered a case at Irilbung police station. According to police source, a medical check-up was also conducted at RIMS Forensic department and the result for confirmation of rape is waiting, a police officer added.
According to complaint lodged by the family, the victim was kidnapped on Friday evening by five unidentified youth who came by a Maruti car. The victim’s hands and legs were tied while dropping her on unconscious state from the vehicle Saturday morning, local eye-witnesses reported.
The victim’s sister told the police that after kidnapping her sister, she received three same unknowns SMS in her mobile phone that her younger sister was in their custody.
Police investigating into the case were yet to made arrest to any suspect behind the gang rape but expressed hope that they will trace the rapists at earliest. “We have collected the cell phone number used by the rapists in sending SMS,” the police officer said.
With tension running high, additional police from Imphal East district headquarters has been sent and detailed to the areas as precautionary measure to prevent further escalation of violence. The public meeting also resolved to press the police to nab the culprits at the earliest and deliver justice to the victim.
