Assam Power Generation Corporation Limited (APGCL) a public sector undertaking of Assam government might dump 6 megawatt ‘Lungnit hydro electric project’. In anticipation of the possibility, a strong opposition was fermenting in the power strived Karbi Anglong.
The odds gained ground after the abduction of 21 labors from the project site by suspected Karbi Peoples Liberation Tiger (KPLT) militants on June 10, the labors were released after 25 days of captivity.
A local labor subcontractor engaged by P.Das and Co. who was awarded the construction works of the project, said, “We are not sure about the actual intention of APGCL, whether they want to shift the fund to other place or they are simply scared after the incident; Karbi Anglong has high hope about the outcome of the project they simply cant chuck us away”.
Meanwhile various organizations had expressed concern about the future of the hydro mission, as industrial growth of this undeveloped region of Assam depends largely on accessibility of power.
Robindra Rongpi senior leader of ASDC (autonomous state demand committee) said “what we want is, the project should come up at all cost but the benefit should go to all, power generated utilizing land and water of Karbi Anglong should not be transmitted to boost economy of other place and we are left to be utilized as a hinterland; the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council should make sure that power generated at our cost should also benefit us”.
