Lahorojan located along the Assam-Nagaland border has become a hot-spot of numerous vices and crimes ranging from prostitution, drugs trafficking, arms running, pilferage of petroleum and other organized crimes.
However, what came as a shocker to the local residents and people of the neighbouring state was the massive growth of street prostitution in the ‘hotels and unlicensed pubs’ located along either side of National Highway 39. Dimapur too has reportedly been impacted by these illegal activities as it is situated at the vicinity of Lahorijan.
A group of Assam based journalists went to verify the ongoing activities in some of the hotels and pubs Sunday without any assistance from the Khatkati police under whose jurisdiction the locality fall.
The reluctant police when informed later intervened, when put into pressure by the journalists and picked up six call-girls and arrested a drug-peddler with thousands of capsules of banned drugs.
Senior journalist of Karbi Anglong and resident of Bokajan Sanju Bora, while condemning the callous attitude of the authority in curbing crimes in Lahorijan area, alleged that the roadside hotels were facilitating “flesh trade, bootlegging and the sale of banned drugs”.
He said “shrewd businessmen who run the hotels manage the authority right from the grass root to the top level, local authority are mere pawn, the master control is somewhere else.
All organized vices goes under protection, large sum to the tune of million is involved in flesh trade and bootlegging, every enforcing authority get its pound of flesh...”.
On Sunday, the journalists alleged that they noticed prostitution in “Hotel Sun City, Apana Punjab, Rajasthan Hotel etc.” Later, Khatkati women police took into custody some girls from these joints.
In the police station, the girls disclosed to media that they had come from Manipur under the assurance of the hotel owners that they would be given jobs of accountant, computer operator or sale girls. They said that they have forced into this profession.
The enraged hotel owners however did not pay much heed to the whole incident. One of them even mentioned that everyone was in their payroll, “so why bother?”
