Over eight hundred school teachers in Meghalaya Friday staged sit-in-protest near Raj Bhavan to protest the Meghalaya government’s failure to fulfill their charter of demands.
The teachers under the banner of All Meghalaya Primary School Teachers Association (AMPSTA) have now threatened to picket Teachers Day celebration Sep 5 across the state if the government fails to comply with their demands.
The lower primary teachers have long been demanding for regular disbursement of salary, retirement benefit and allowance for head teachers, advance increment of higher qualification besides others.
“We have placed our demands before the government for several months but they are turning a blind eye to our genuine demands and forced us to take to the streets like this,” AMPSTA General Secretary, FC Shullai said.
Chief Minister Mukul Sangma, meanwhile, admitted that previous governments did not pay adequate attention in the education sector leading to frequent teachers’ protest.
“I have directed Chief Secretary (WMS Pariat) to find out the problems of the exact problems (of the teachers) and submit a report,” Sangma told journalists.
