Manipur chief minister O Ibobi Singh Wednesday made an earnest appealed to the people to emulate the Nupilal freedom fighters and come forward to help restore peace in the state.

Ibobi was addressing the people of the state on the occasion of “Nupilal Numit”. Manipur has been observing “Nupilal Numit” every year to pay homage to the brave women of the state who fought for justice against the British colonial rulers and monopolistic trade interests in the Nupilals (women wars) of 1904 and 1939.

The chief minister led the public in offering tributes to the Nupilal freedom fighters at the official function this morning at the Nupilal Memorial complex, Imphal. A number of civil society and women`s bodies also organised their own functions to mark the occasion.

Speaking at the official function held at the Nupilal memorial complex, the chief minister recalled the circumstances that led to the two women’s risings in 1904 and 1939, and said the moral strength and courage of the women, who stood up to fight injustice and exploitation will remain a shining beacon.

Asserting that the courage of the then womenfolk of the state were still in the blood of today’s women, Ibobi urged the women to be co-operative with the government in its efforts to bring peace in the state so that development could be accelerated.

“For development to bring about in the state, prevalent of peace the first and foremost condition and to bring about peace, I appeal to the women to extend their valuable cooperation to government efforts. My government has been trying it best to bring peace in the state,” he added.

Pointing out that apart from taking care of their wards and their families, women of the state were also taking important roles in social issues, Ibobi said society should not look down upon the women.

State deputy chief minister Gaikhangam, who presided over the function called upon the people for a concerted effort to bring an end to the insurgency problem of the state. “Now time has come for finding a way to end this prolonged insurgency problems,” he said.

The function was attended by several ministers, MLAs of both ruling and opposition apart from top officials of the Manipur government.

The state level function was marked by staging of a play based on historic Nupilal (Women war) played by women artists only and presentation of theme songs by the women.

Nupi Lal –which means women’s war in Manipuri- is one of the important movements in the history of Manipuri women. It was started in 1939 as an agitation by Manipuri women against the oppressive economic and administrative policies ruled by the Manipur Maharaja and the Political Agent – Gimson- of the British Government (1933-45) in Manipur, and later on, evolved into a movement for the constitutional and administrative reform in Manipur.
