Following media reports on CMJ university which awarded “fake” Ph.D degree to 434 students and enrolled 490 students for the Ph D programme during 2012-13, advocate High court of Meghalaya, S.P. Sharma for the public interest has clarified that CMJ university took admission in PhD and MPhil programme as per section of UGC (minimum standards and procedure for awards of MPhil/PhD degree) regulations 2009.

In a public notice cum appeal, Sharma appealed to the students and the public not to pay and heed to rumor “masquerading” as news and views, as the CMJ university or any university in India cannot issue fake degree or certificate.

All degrees conferred by the university are genuine and bona-fide as per sections 2 (f) and section 22 of UGC Act 1956, he added.

Sharma, however clarified that fake degrees by definition was issued by vested interests that were not related to the university and want to earn by dubious means by cheating students in the name of the university.

Sharma pointed out that as per section 7 of UGC (minimum standards and procedure for awards of MPhil/PhD degree) regulations 2009, CMJ university has the power and discretion to fix the annual intake of PhD and M. Phil enrolment “depending on the numbers of faculty supervisors”.

All the CMJ university’ supervisors and external guides are PhDs in their respective field and have a minimum of two years experience, Sharma added.

Pointing out that CMJ university has 10 full time faculty members with PhD qualifications apart from more than 350 fully qualified empanelled PhD supervisors/guides, Sharma said that the list of which was provided on the university’s website for the last two years and the concerning report was sent to UGC, two months back.

Sharma further added that CMJ university from time to time used to inform UGC about its PhD admissions and enrolments.
