A government school teacher has been terminated from his service after he was accused of sexual harassing students, an official said on Saturday.
Vishwajit Jha, who teaches PGT Physics at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya School in Nongstoin, the district headquarters of West Khasi Hills, was found to be guilty of sexual harassment, Deputy Commissioner Arunkumar Kembhavi said.
“The girl students were courageous enough to come forward to report the matter to one of our Executive Magistrates during routine inspection on March 23,” he said.
Based on his initial inquiry report, Kembhavi said a committee was constituted comprising of Extra Assistant Commissioner, District Social Welfare Officer and Deputy Labour commissioner.
After the committee confirmed the harassment, he said Jha was immediately terminated from the service. Kembhavi said he has recommended the JNV Samiti Shillong to lodge an FIR against the teacher under relevant provisions of The Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act (POCSO), 2012.
“It should serve as a warning to all who think that they can get away with any kind of abuse and exploitation of children,” he said.
