Rengma Naga Peoples’ Council (RNPC) Tuesday expressed unhappiness at the land survey committee for not including Rengma Nagas in the list of study/survey. The Government of Assam has recently constituted a committee to study/survey lands belonging to the indigenous people, and to find measures to protect the same.
While applauding the government for taking interest in protecting the lands of the indigenous people, RNPC expressed unhappiness for not including the Rengma Nagas in their list.
In a press release issued by its president Shahi Rengma and general secretary Solomon Rengma, RNPC alleged that no one from the Rengma Naga apex bodies were invited or officially intimated, neither did the committee visited them for verification of their existence and their lands.
While stating that such ignorance was becoming very unbecoming of a responsible committee entrusted by the government for the welfare of indigenous people and their lands, the council questioned if they were being “deliberately ignored?” Time and again the Rengma Nagas has been ignored of all rights of being indigenous, it stated.
While reminding the concerned authorities that the Rengma Nagas existed since time immemorial in the present day Karbi Anglong, RNPC appealed the committee and the Government of Assam to do a thorough verification and consultation with all the stake holders so that there can be inclusive progress, prosperity and identity.
