In a move to check illegal migrants entering the state from neighbouring Assam, authority of Manipur government dismantled five temporary bridges built on river running at inter-state border.
The five dismantled bridges, two each at Gulardhon and Ningthembam villages and one at Karamnagar area, were constructed on Jiri river without the knowledge of the state authority, an official source here said Thursday.
A police officer said that the bridges were found during routine patrolling to check migrants from entering the state. State police at the border district have been on high alert to check intrusion of illegal migrants into the state under the strict advice of the state chief minister N Biren Singh who is also looking after the home department.
In the meantime, chief minister N Biren Singh, in a statement uploaded in the social media facebook, confirmed that the bridges were dismantled by state police personnel as part of its close vigilant to check entry of illegal migrants from Assam into Manipur.
He added that police at the border areas of the state were conducting round the clock patrolling.
Even though they expressed concern about the infiltration of illegal migrants into the state, previous government had not taken up any step to check it, he alleged.
No proper steps to guard the border and checking of illegal migrants were taken up by the previous government, Singh added.
“Please support and cooperate” with the government initiative to check illegal migrants in the state,” he stated.
Noting the burning issue of illegal migrants in Manipur, the new BJP-led coalition government had started taking up steps to check illegal migrants into the state from the beginning.
Not only in Jiribam district but the state government had already strengthened its police force across both inter-state and international borders to check entry of illegal migrants into the state.
Recently, government had opened police check posts at Behiang in Churachandpur district bordering with Myanmar while intensifying all the police check posts at the border areas of the state.
