Two officials of a company engaged in the construction of railway line in Manipur have been kidnapped by some armed miscreants suspected to be militants. A police source said that the officials - Ashok Sharma from Rajasthan and Bidhuyut Majumdar from Assam - were whisked away from their worksite at Makru village under Tuosem police station of Tamenglong district Saturday, around 10.30 am
They are the supervisors of the Bhartia Infra Projects Limited (BIPL) engaging in the construction of railway tunnel of the Jiribam-Tupul railway line at Makru area, the source added. Police suspect hands of militants behind the kidnapping of the officials for ransom. Earlier in January this year, two employees of Hindustan Construction Company, one of the companies engaging in the tunnel construction of the railway line, were kidnapped for ransom by cadres of Kuki National Liberation Front (KNLF)-MC faction. They were safely rescued by state police later.
The Jiribam-Tupul railway line is a part of Trans-Asian Railway project which is considered to be crucial in transforming India’s ‘Look East policy’ into ‘Act East’.  While funds are not holding back the drive, the law and order situation, abduction of officials and workers of the companies engaging in the project and attack on them is hampering the progress of the project.
