The women’s final in the Rome Masters will be between Maria Sharapova and Sam Stosur after both ousted higher-seeded opponents on Saturday.
Seventh seed Sharapova stunned top-seeded Dane Caroline Wozniacki 7-5 6-3, after the sixth-seeded Stosur had earlier overcame Chinese fourth seed Li Na 7-6 (8/6) 6-0 in the first semi-final.
The first set between Sharapova and Wozniacki was laden with breaks of serve, the Russian eventually serving out at 6-5 to take the upper hand. Three-time grand slam winner Sharapova then found herself 3-1 down in the second set but reeled off five straight games to sink the world number one.
Stosur broke early on and led 5-3 in the first set only to waste a set point as Li forced a tie-break. The Chinese player had a set point of her own during the breaker but Stosur held firm and prevailed 8/6.
And once again the second set was one-sided, Stosur’s ground strokes far too powerful for Li as she wrapped up victory in 82 minutes.
