Workshop on social media for empowerment in Kohima

With the aim of facilitating individuals and organizations in using social media for self-development and also sharing the best practices, the Digital Empowerment Foundation New Delhi, in collaboration with the American centre, New Delhi and supported by YouthNet Nagaland, organized one-day workshop on “social media for empowerment” at Hotel Vivor here Tuesday.
In his key note address, MLA Mmhonlumo Kikon urged the young people to use social media for positive impact in the state and in the region. 
Pointing out that one should be responsible while posting comments in the social media, he advised the gathering to use social media as a platform to express with thoughtful words and constructive suggestion.
Kikon said social media could be used to discuss on important social issues.
MLA maintained that thousands of youths using social media daily should be a purposeful one for the society and strengthen the democracy in the country. Policy analyst Amba Jamir, in his address on the topic ‘social media and policy making’, said social media was a new paradigm for communications that brought a lot of surprise changes to the political and social landscape.
Jamir informed that home ministry, government of India in December 2014 instructed its officials to use social media but with restraints. 
He said there was increased use of social media in government for public engagements, disseminating of information, policy making, recruitment, generating awareness, education etc.
Jamir added that said embracing social media could spur improvement in providing fast and low cost way for the governments to disseminate policy information attain public feedback and communicate with citizens. However, he cautioned that wrong information could spread and multiply rapidly. Further, Jamir shared the details of advantages and disadvantages of using social media.
Ravi Gurtia of digital empowerment foundation spoke on the objective of the workshop, YouthNet Lezo executive member Putsure spoke on YouthNet and its social network message.
Cloud evangelist Sunny Sharma spoke on status of social media from a national perspective and reflecting on how social media has been the reason and solution for crisis in North East at different times. IT programme consultant Yanpvuo spoke on social media , enabler for a smarter government and progressive society.
Dr. Tali Ao Librarian spoke on “the status and power of social media and how it can be used best in North East”, Lawrence Miglialo on “the international perspective-overview on social media worldwide” while summing up on how NGOs and other organization can adopt social media as an effective tool for communications and outreach by Ravi Guria deputy programme Director, media and communications, digital empowerment foundation New Delhi.
YouthNet members, social networking administrators, church youth leaders, NGOs, students and others attended the programme.
