Science Express–Biodiversity special train halts at Dimapur

Science Express, the iconic biodiversity train that encompasses the unique science exhibition focusing on biodiversity and climate change, mounted on a customized 16 coaches AC train made its two-day stop at Dimapur Railway Station, Thursday. The science express train was inaugurated by chairman pollution control board, Nagaland, A Rongsen Wati (IFS).

Inaugurated on June 5 coinciding with “World Environment Day” at Delhi by chief minister Sheila Dikshit, who also holds the portfolio of environment and forest, the Science Express-Biodiversity Special (SEBS) would travel to 52 locations across the country till December 22 and at each location, it would be halting for three to four days during which the exhibition would be open to visitors.

Of the 16 SEBS coaches, eight coaches supported by MoEF, are solely dedicated to showcasing the myriad biodiversity spread across the bio-geographical zones of India which include the Trans-Himalaya and the Himalayas, the Gangetic Plain, North East India, the Desert and Semi-Arid Zone, the Western Ghats, the Deccan Peninsula, the Coasts and Islands.

These eight coaches highlighting the biodiversity in the country would focus on the range of biological diversity, critically endangered species (IUCN Red list), biodiversity hotspots; domesticated biodiversity (agriculture, animal husbandary); biodiversity and livelihoods, bio-culture; threats/challenges (climate change, other anthropogenic); conservation measures; success stories/experiences/unique stories.

The exhibition would also cover various other facets like marine, coastal, forest, microbial, agro biodiversity and their linkage with livelihoods besides challenges of conservation.  

Science enthusiasts and students can visit the Science Express train which is very informative and educative for people of all ages. The train would be stationed at Dimapur railway station till June 22, 5 p.m.
