Konyak Union (KU) along with MLAs from the district have rejected and opposed Ministry of Home Affairs’ (MHA) offer and proposal of economic package, autonomous council and retention of erstwhile regional council. The decision was taken at KU’s advisory board meeting Thursday.
It was also learnt that only few MLAs from Mon district would be attending the meeting called by chief minister to discuss ‘Frontier Nagaland’ demand scheduled at Kohima Friday.
It may be mentioned that the proposal was made through the state chief minister who along with 15-member delegation met the Union Home Minister on June 4 to discuss issues related to the statehood demand.
It was also learnt that establishing an autonomous region/council was proposed on the recommendation of the state government.
The recommendation was based on the findings of the high powered committee led by the state chief secretary that there was development deficit in Eastern Nagaland area.
The recommendation was also based on historical factors and special provisions made for Eastern Nagaland under article 371 - A (2).
Meanwhile, KU also expressed dismay with the minutes of the meeting drafted and circulated by Abu Metha on the ground that he was merely the press secretary to the chief minister and not of the government. KU members were of the view that the chief secretary should have recorded and circulated the meeting minutes.
It may be mentioned that on June 4 the Union Home minister P. Chidambaram had ruled out ‘Frontier Nagaland’ state as demanded by ENPO comprising of four districtson the ground that the centre did not find it viable.
