Orientation for information of public relations staff underway

Two-day orientation programme organised by information of public relations (IPR) on communication and public relations was held on July 24 at Hotel Millenium, Kohima.
Speaking at the inaugural function, Tohanba said training, especially in the field of journalism was more important than ever today.
He said journalism was a constantly evolving profession and one needed to constantly sharpen skills and learn new ones.
“What we know today will become redundant tomorrow,” he said further stating that there was certainly no room for those people who are complacent.
Therefore it was crucial that trainings were held regularly so that staff working with IPR would also educate and apply it in day to day activities, he added.
While stressing on the fact that Information and communication technology was the most effective instrument of public relations, Tohanba said that information technology was a facilitator impacting every facet of one’s life today.
Keeping in mind that it has become imperative for every professional to stay competitive and excel through constant upgradation of knowledge, skills and abilities, Tohanba said that the department has also come up with a number of new initiatives to facilitate its members.
He also said that the department has implemented mobile audio visual publicity in all the eleven districts besides providing computers, laptops and digital cameras to all officers till the sub-division levels and there are provisions to provide the same to the information assistant levels very soon.
Tohanba said “this year the department would give emphasis to government to Citizen interface, advocacy of State to the mainland people and tie-up with television channels for better publicity”.
Director, IPR, Imokokba in his keynote address said the realm of communication has exploded and technological advancements were being made with mind-boggling speed.
In view of the revolutionary change and growth in every sphere of life and mainly in communication, he said that the media plays a decisive role in the development of society.
He stated that “as IPR officials, one cannot afford to remain ignorant of what is happening around the world in terms of communication strategies”.
President, Kohima Press Club, Kopelo Krome who spoke on ‘Private Media’s inter-relationship with IPR department acknowledged the department of IPR for extending all supports to help the private media and hoped that the relationship would grow from strength to strength.
Deputy Director, IPR, Chubalepzuk, who chaired the programme, also pronounced the welcome address where he also stressed on importance of training in every profession and the need for regular refresher courses. Kenei Chale presented a special number on the occasion. Joint director, IPR, Dominic Yazokie delivered vote of thanks.
During the technical sessions, OSD (skill development), planning and coordination, Sino Phom gave a presentation on ‘Journalism and basics of news reporting’ while IEC Consultant, NRHM, Metevinuo Sakhrie discussed on ‘Basics of Communication’. Altogether, 27 IPR personnel from Kohima, Dimapur, Peren and Phek are attending the two-day programme.
