Following Supreme Court’s latest order directing police chiefs in all states and union territories to ensure compliance of its direction that no material, including films of any VLT, be put on the safety glasses of any vehicle or face the music, Kohima police Tuesday directed all vehicle owners including VIPs, government officials issued with government vehicles within the district to voluntarily remove any material, including films of any VLT from the safety glasses of the vehicle within two weeks or will be penalised as specified by law.

In a circular, Kohima superintendent of police said use of black film or any other material was not permitted on the windscreen and side windows of vehicles.

As per the provisions of sub-rule (2) of Rule 100 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989 the glass of the windscreen and rear window of every motor vehicle which come out from the manufacturers shop has to be such and be maintained in such a condition that the visual light transmission (VLT) is not less than 70 %.

The glasses used for side windows have to be such and be maintained in such condition that the visual light transmission is not less than 50 %.

Violation of the rule is punishable with challan and on the spot removal of film. Exemption is made in respect of authorized vehicles used by those under ‘Z Plus’ and ‘Z’ category security, SP stated.

Further, Kohima police directed all motor accessories shops, dealing with films, to stop pasting of films on the safety glasses of vehicles with immediate effect.
