In Dimapur city, spread over almost every corner of the city is an estimated 4000 female sex workers comprising of 50% local girls and 50% non local girls between the age group of 16 to 40 years. Police and IRB raids have not stopped the rise in the figures.

A report prepared revealed that the local girls refused to reveal their identities. Some were highly educated, some were school drop-outs and few uneducated.

The reasons for being in the “business” ranged from -unemployment, high economic demands on their living standards or wanting to earn extra money. Some girls from rich family background said they were  in the “business” purely “for enjoyment”.

Most of the non-local female sex workers are Muslims from Assam or immigrants from Bangladesh. They were mostly from poor background, uneducated and unemployed. Some of the women were forced into the “business” by their husbands.

Non-local girls who come to Dimapur for prostitution go back when situation becomes bad due to police raids.

Most non-local sex workers stay in Dimapur for sometime, while others remain for two to three years. Some of them pretend to be locals and take on local names. This makes it difficult for NGOs to take an accurate census on the number of sex workers in Dimapur.

Most of the sex workers, were either married, unmarried, widows, divorcees or students.  Some of  the girls were forced into the trade after being duped while for some, it was due to economic compulsions.

One NGO of Dimapur could register only 870 female sex workers since the majority refused to identify themselves as such.

The NGO provides free condoms, treatment of Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI), education on HIV, STD and STI, free abscess treatment, psycho-social support and advocacy with stakeholders to create enabling environment among registered sex workers. Unidentified and unregistered sex workers continue to  spread HIV, STD and other diseases, a report said.
