Former editor Thomas Riato Jasokie laid to rest

Late Thomas Riato Jasokie the second son of former chief minister J.B. Jasokie   who passed away on December 4 in Bethel Hospital Kohima, was laid to rest at late Thomas’ residence premises at Leriechazou(Aradura) after a funeral service attended by hundreds of mourners.

Late Thomas is survived by his wife, one son and one daughter.He was the second of six children of veteran Naga politician since the NPC and then NNO days and former chief minister late J.B.Jasokie.

Late Thomas founded and edited the popular Weekly Journal during the late 80s till mid-90s through which he brought refreshing changes to the world of Nagaland weekly tabloid journalism. Condolences were received from various personalities including friends and well wishers of late Thomas.

Additional chief secretary Toshi Aier, in his condolence message, described late Thomas as a large-hearted person with a passion for reading and writing which he used as instruments for the Weekly Journal as the independent voice of the people.Aier also mentioned about late Thomas’ amicable and accessible nature and  his support for noble causes in society.

Press Secretary to chief minister Abu Metha, in his condolence message recalled the contributions made to society by late Thomas Jasokie through the Weekly Journal, which gripped the reading public including himself as school and college going students.

Metha also recalled the difficult period under which the local media had to function and the various difficulties and problems faced by late Thomas while publishing the weekly tabloid. On behalf of himself and his wife, Metha conveyed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family members of late Thomas Jasokie.

Liriechazou Panchayat in a condolence issued by its chairman Thepfuchazou and secretary Situo expressed shocked and grief at the sudden demise of late Thomas, who was a senior member and pioneer of the colony.

The panchayat recalled the generosity of late Thomas and his contributions for the development of the colony.  The Panchayat in particular, recalled the financial and material contributions to the colony‘s M.E.School by late Thomas and added that in his death, the colony has lost a great visionary and a considerate being. 

In another message read out, Editor Nagaland Post Geoffrey Yaden recalled his long association with late Thomas since 1972-73. He described late Thomas as a man who kept his words, was considerate and unassuming despite being the son of a famous politician who was minister then chief minister. Further, Geoffrey said late Thomas, as editor of Weekly Journal impacted the local media with creative, thoughtful and entertaining features.

Condolence messages were also received from Kohima Press Club and Kohima Science College.
Hundreds mourners attended the funeral programme after which the body of late Thomas was laid to rest near his residence at Leiriechazou colony Kohima.

Rio condoles Jasokie’s demise
Chief minister Neiphiu Rio Wednesday condoled the demise of Thomas Riato Jasokie, who passed away on December 4 at Kohima.

In a condolence message, Rio said Thomas has served society in a positive manner and made sincere efforts for the upliftment of the needy. As a journalist, he gave voice to the voiceless and echoed the feelings of the common people, said Rio.

In his demise, the press, media and journalist fraternity have lost a leader who led by example and made commendable contributions in laying the foundations of a “free, democratic and vibrant fourth estate” in this part of the world, Rio said. 

The chief minister and his family members offered condolences to the members of the bereaved family and prayed to Almighty God give you strength and courage during this painful period and that the departed soul rest in eternal peace.
