Horticulture: Option for income

A training program on "vegetables and fruit processing at home level" was conducted at NCRC (Sümi) Kohima initiated by Women Department of the Church, on August 2 at the Church premises with Watienla Jamir, joint director horticulture as the chief guest.
Watienla while commenting on the initiative of the organizers cautioned on the random consumption of unknown market products which are often unhealthy and hazardous for health. She opined that starting small was always the right thing to do and advised the women to start with a small 'Self Help Group'. She also cautioned that to make it marketable, proper packaging and using the right ingredients with the right amount was the key to successful marketing. To have better networking knowledge of internet is a must which the NCRC (Sümi) church was trying to promote.
The chief guest categorically stated that Nagas being predominantly agro-based society could solve many societal problems as well as unemployment with the help of horticulture. She expressed with optimism that horticulture has become a viable option for many who are looking for extra income as well as full time employment even in Nagaland.
The main trainers included Sükhali Sümi, Akheni Kesho, Augustoli Sümi, Nikhüli Pucho and Akali Sümi.
While delivering the keynote address, Akheni said many vegetables and fruits are wasted because of lack of knowledge on preservation. She also observed that more could be produced but due lack of know-how, it discouraged the market as well as farmers.
The program was chaired by Atoli, women leader. About 50 trainees participated in the training programme where food items including hot and sweet mango chutney, mixed vegetable pickle, pineapple squash, ginger candy, pineapple jam, green chilli pickle, brinjal pickle, pumpkin pickle and tomato sauce were prepared.
