Khekiho wins RS seat

KOHIMA, JUNE 26 (NPN): DAN candidate Khekiho Zhimomi of the NPF Thursday emerged as the winner to the state bye-election to the lone Rajya Sabha seat which was held today. Polling was held in the Nagaland Assembly Secretariat.
According to Secretary, Nagaland Legislative Assembly & Returning Officer for the biennial elections to the Council of States, N. Benjamin Newmai out of the 60 votes caste by all the MLAs, Khekiho Zhimomi (NPF) polled 36 votes while K. Therie (Congress) polled 24 votes. The Returning Officer also issued a certificate to Khekiho Zhimomi.
Talking to newsmen, the newly elected Rajya Sabha member, Khekiho Zhimomi said his top most priority would be the Naga political issue. “It was priority, it is my priority and it will be my priority” he said. He maintained that the government of India, various political parties, successive governments and national workers has failed the Nagas while the Naga people have never failed themselves.
Khekiho said he would take-up the Railway connectivity to the state and region on priority basis. He also thanked the Almighty God, state chief minister, Neiphiu Rio, NPF president, Dr. Shurhozelie, party workers and DAN alliance partners BJP, NCP and Independent (s) for electing  him to the Rajya Sabha  from the state. 
Meanwhile, Leader of opposition, Chingwang Konyak said the Rajya Sabha election results was on expected line, adding that the Congress candidate could have gained one more vote.
It may be mentioned the bye-election was necessitated following the resignation of the Rajya Sabha member, T. R. Zeliang. The tenure of office of the Rajya Sabha member will end on April 2, 2010.
CM felicitates
State chief minister, Neiphiu Rio has felicitated Khekiho Zhimomi for being elected to the lone Rajya Sabha seat with a “resounding victory margin”. Rio through a statement on behalf of the state government wished Khekiho a successful tenure in the Parliament. It expressed gratitude to the alliance partners of the DAN, BJP, NCP and the Independent MLAs for whole heartedly supporting the DAN’s consensus candidate.
