An inter-state car lifter couple allegedly involved in killing of more than five drivers after hijacking vehicles have been arrested in Silchar by Assam police today and will be brought to Shillong for interrogation, police said. The couple identified as Raju Barman and Remita Basuamatry would be handed over to Shillong Police on Tuesday to establish their involvement in similar crimes here. The duo was arrested in Silchar after the Meghalaya police provided its counterpart with the information. East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police (Shillong City) Claudia A Lyngwa here said that the couple had hijacked a Meghalaya tourist taxi from Guwahati and attempted to murder the driver in July. The driver, Badal Singh, perhaps, the oldest tourist taxi driver in Meghalaya, however, managed to escape after he was thrown into a gorge at Pynursla village. However, the couple fell into the trap of the Silchar police after an alert was issued by the Meghalaya police that the two most wanted car lifters planned to whisk away another tourist van, which they hired from Shillong to Silchar. “Their arrest would surely throw us some light more into the carjacking in Meghalaya. We will get to know about the extent of involvement of the couple and their gang once we interrogate them,” Lyngwa said, adding that the couple have killed more than five drivers in Guwahati alone. In the past there have been many cases of mysterious disappearance of vehicles from Shillong and the drivers were found murdered . According to official sources, car lifting has become another rising criminal business in the north east, in response to the demand-supply theory. It is also suspected that inter-state criminal gangs are coordinating their activities in the region with involvement of some armed outfits.
