Carli Lloyd’s extra-time winner gave United States a 1-0 victory over Brazil in the Olympic women’s football final. Lloyd’s 20-yard strike came in the sixth minute of the extra period after she picked up a pass from Amy Rodriguez who had eluded two attempted tackles. Marta had a great chance to level, but a challenge from Heather Mitts followed by blocks from Kate Markgraf and Christie Rampone denied her. Victory gave the US its third gold medal in four Games. The Americans did well to keep the score at 0-0 during the 90 minutes against a thrilling Brazilian attack. US keeper Hope Solo had to save at the feet of Cristiane before the Brazil ace let fly with a volley that narrowly cleared the bar. Two-time world player of the year Marta had earlier tested Solo with several tricky crosses and then forced the keeper into making making a remarkable save from her vicious volley. The Americans came to life in the final moments of normal time and had two great scoring chances, with Brazil keeper Barbara keeping out Angela Hucles’ and Rodriguez’s efforts. However, they got their reward a few minutes into extra time when Lloyd gave Barbara no chance with her angled drive. Earlier, Germany took the bronze medal by beating Japan 2-0.
