In a new development to the stand off between vice chancellor, Nagaland University, Prof. K Kannan and Nagaland University Teachers’ Association (NUTA), the vice chancellor has reportedly suspended both CEC NUTA president Rosemary Dzüvichü and secretary general N Venuh. NUTA sources alleged that the suspension order issued Monday did not give any concrete reasons for the suspension, apart from citing some statutes of Nagaland University Acts and central government rules. Rosemary is a lecturer in English Department while Venuh is a Reader in History Department. NUTA sources also said CEC NUTA has convened an emergency meeting of NUTA members of all three NU campuses Tuesday at Kohima to discuss the suspension order and the mass resignation tendered by thirty five NUTA members. The meeting is likely to demand immediate revocation of the suspension order without any precondition as well as to chalk out NUTA’s future course of action, sources added. Meanwhile, reacting to the vice chancellor’s statement on mass resignation of all HoDs and members of academic and executive councils on August 11 last, NUTA alleged that the vice chancellor had “intentionally created a misconception” on the issue. CEC NUTA president Rosemary Dzüvichü and secretary general N Venuh in a press release questioned Kannan’s appeal to resume work when all academic departments and programmes were running smoothly. Arguing that the statute of Nagaland University Act permitted any Head of Department to step down from the post and relinquish his responsibilities, NUTA also said copies of the resignations had also been submitted to the President of India, who is the Visitor, which is the highest authority of the Nagaland University. Reiterating the corruption charges against the vice chancellor, NUTA said Kannan was “still under scanner with the visitor yet to take action.” (Staff Reporter)
