At least 35 people, including seven women, here Tuesday complained of loss of vision after treatment for their eye ailments at a free eye camp late July. The camp had earlier left 20 other people blind. The victims have been admitted to a government hospital here, 180 km south of Tamil Nadu capital Chennai, and were being administered medicines to reduce pain. The state government Monday announced that Rs.500,000 would be paid as solatium to each of the 20 victims who lost their eyesight during the same camp conducted by a private hospital. State Health Minister M.R.K. Panneerselvam had assured victims the guilty would be prosecuted. Preliminaery investigations indicated the hospital used outdated medicines for post-surgery treatment, causing blinding of the patients.
