Representatives of Nagaland University Teachers Association (NUTA) from three campuses of NU were reportedly denied permission to meet vice chancellor Prof. K Kannan in his office chamber Tuesday. “We came to meet the Vice Chancellor, but he refused us to meet him in his office chamber… The Teachers patiently stood outside his door for nearly 3½ hours but to no avail,” NUTA members told newsmen. NUTA representatives had gone to submit a memorandum pertaining to the suspension order issued to two of their colleagues. “It is very unfortunate that when the NUTA wanted to meet him to submit a representation, the VC resorted to filling up his office with police personnel. Later in the day, the VC got the deployment of the civil administration and even riot police,” stated a press release issues by six executive members of NUTA including GT Thong, John Sema, Pauline Alila, Lanusashi, Temjensosang and DP Chaturvedi. The release also stated that since the VC had refused to meet the teachers, NUTA had to inform the vice chancellor through media to immediately revoke the suspension order of the two teachers. It further informed that CEC had resolved to indefinitely cease all activities with effect from August 27, 2008, till the suspension orders were “revoked unconditionally.” Meanwhile, the Post Graduate Students’ Union (Kohima Campus) has demanded the vice chancellor to clarify on the suspension notices, stating clearly the grounds on which the two teachers were suspended. The 2nd & 4th Semester English Department and 2nd & 4th Semester History and Archeology Department, have also in a press release said that “As far as the students are concern, they have being executing their duties to the best in the Department.”
