Students destroy ‘gutkhas’

Diphupar Naga Students' Union with the elders of Diphupar village along with hundreds of students from different schools under its jurisdiction (Diphupar) conducted a mass social work. The social work was held under the theme 'health consciousness', with Dr.Avitso Liegise (Junior Resident Doctor) of Christian Institute of Health and Research as main resource person, Saturday. Addressing the gathering, Dr. Avitso spoke on the ill effects of 'gutkhas and tobacco' to human body and cautioned the youngsters on its impact. Avitso, said the diseases like tongue, throat, stomach and intestine ulcer etc were caused due to chewing of Gutkha and tobacco products and ultimately ones life is taken over by it after a period of 5 to 10 years. He also made an appeal to stop taking tobacco products adding "if you are a problem to yourself than how can you be a part of the solution in solving the greater cause of the society in general" Later, after the function, Kitoi Sumi president of the Diphupar Naga Students' Union along with its members and students burnt around three thousands 'gutkhas' sachets that was seized during a raid in and around Diphupar, by DNSU. According to Kitoi the shop owners had been warned of severe punishment and fines would be imposed if any shopkeeper were caught selling 'gutkhas' in the locality.
