Chief minister Neiphiu Rio has expressed deep concern and anguish over the atrocities perpetrated against the Christian community and damages to Christian institutions in Orissa, especially in Kandhmal district. Rio in a letter to his Orissa counterpart Naveen Patnaik said it was imperative that quick and timely action be taken against the religious fundamentalists who were mindlessly targeting innocent people and properties. “Religious intolerance has no place in a secular country like ours. I strongly urge you to take all necessary actions to protect the lives and properties of the religious minorities in your State,” Rio said. In a separate press statement, the chief minister said the series of inhuman and uncivilized attacks that were being perpetrated against Christians and Christian institutions in the country, especially in the State of Orissa needed to be condemned by all right thinking citizens. “It is highly disturbing to observe that innocent Christians continue to be targeted regularly by religious fundamentalists,” the chief minister said. Rio urged the Government of India, the State Government of Orissa and all Agencies concerned to address the crisis with stern action and take all necessary measures to extend security and safety to the Christian minorities and all Christian Institutions. He also extended sympathies and concern to all affected families and prayed the Almighty God to comfort them.
