Unions condemn rape

DKSU, VVC: Dimapur Kyong Students' Union (DKSU) has condemned the gang rape meted to a pregnant woman by four youths on August 27 and demanded for capital punishment and immediate exclusion of the accused from their respective villages. the union has extended their support to the silent procession called by Naga Women Hoho Dimapur (NWHD) to protest and demand for justice. Meanwhile DKSU has requested all its members to attend the procession. In a separate press release jointly issued by Vihokhu Village Council (VVC) chairman, Khehovi Yeptho and head GB, Hovikhe Jimomi the GBs, village council, STH, students' bodies and elders of Vihokhu village have strongly condemned the incident and stated that the act had brought disgrace to the Naga society. In the interim the council has extended its support to the silent procession called by NWHD. ASTD: Office of the Ao Senso Telongjem Dimapur Nagaland (ASTD) has expressed its deepest resentment and condemnation over the recent incidents where unprecedented atrocities were being meted out to women in Naga society. Highlighting the recent rape incident, where a pregnant woman and a mother of two was gang raped and brutally molested, ASTD urged the authorities to give severest of punishment be the culprits with a view to eradicate crime against woman in the society. KNSK: Konyak Nyupuh Sheko Khong Kohima unit has condemned the violence committed on a pregnant woman. KNSK stated that such attacks violate the sanctity of motherhood and sexually and psychologically oppress women. The union further urged the authority to punish the abusers and to give justice to the victim and to check further incidents on victimizing women. CHDD: Chakhesang Hoho Dimapur District has condemned the heinous and inhuman act of gang rape of a pregnant woman. Terming the act unheard and unknown in Naga society, the Hoho stated that the perpetrators should be awarded the highest degree of punishment which will serve as deterrence for all. The organizations/agencies tackling the case should not succumb to the evil pressure but fight till the justice is pronounced, the Hoho stated. PWO: Phomla Hoichem (Phom Women Organisation) has "strongly" condemned the "brutal" rape incident that took place August 27. Describing the incident as "shameless and inhuman act" the organisation said has brought "great shame" to Naga society. It further appealed law enforcing agency to punish the culprit as per the law of the land at the earliest possible. Hoho also urged the village authority to immediately expel them from their respective villages "in order to save the Naga identity" and to contain the same behavior in the future. NC: Naga Council, Dimapur has condemned the gruesome gang rape of a pregnant mother on August 27 at Old Showuba village. The council in a condemnation note issued by its General Secretary W.Lemba Chang stated that the council has taken serious note of the present trend of crimes perpetrated against women in the recent times in the society especially in and around Dimapur i.e. rape and murder of a minor student of Mount Carmel School, molestation of a nun at Holy Redeemer Nursing etc, which, indeed, added the release, is not a good sign for the future Naga society. Meanwhile, the Naga Council has requested all the Dimapur civil societies, Tribal Hohos, Naga Councilors to participate in the silent procession, organized by Naga Women Hoho, Dimapur, on September 3 starting from Super Market showing solidarity to the just demand of the women Hoho.
