Federation of Central Universities Teachers’ Associations (FEDCUTA) has written to both President of India, Pratibha Patil, who is also the Visitor of Central Universities and Minister of Human Resource Development, Arjun Singh, seeking their immediately intervention into the ongoing imbroglio in Nagaland University. FEDCUTA in separate representations submitted to the President and HRD minister dated September 13, alleged that the dictatorial, manipulative and corrupt style of functioning of vice chancellor, Nagaland University, Prof. K Kannan had totally vitiated the academic atmosphere in the Nagaland University. Accusing Prof. K Kannan of unleashing a reign of terror on the teachers of the University, FEDCUTA urged both the President and HRD minister to revoke the “illegal suspension” of the teachers of Nagaland University revoked and also to immediately remove Prof. Kannan from the post of Vice-Chancellor of the Nagaland University. The Association also expressed shock that in the midst of the Visitorial inquiry against the vice chancellor, the latter was continuing with his acts of harassment, victimization and of personal vendetta against the teachers. “He is trying to throttle the dissenting voices by suspending and holding illegal enquiries against the office bearers of the Teachers Association,” FEDCUTA alleged and added, “a glaring example of this is the latest act of illegal suspension order against the President and Secretary General of Nagaland University Teachers Association.” The association also reminded that in a democratic country like India, the universities were centres where “the dissenting voices are not only tolerated but are also encouraged as this strengthens the democratic functioning of all our institutions.”
