MMC election called off

State Election Commission has called off the election programme for conduct of Mokokchung Municipal Council (MMC) as no nomination paper had been filed till 3 p.m of Friday (September 19), the last day for filing of nomination papers. State election commissioner HK Khulu in a notification directed that the election programme announced earlier on September 2, 2008, be called off with immediate effect. Further, under the provision of Rule 31 (2) of the Nagaland Municipal Rule, 2003, the election commissioner directed that since the ward(s)/constituencies of Mokokchung Municipal Council had failed twice to elect their representatives to the MMC as per the notification of the commission, “the State Election Commission shall not be bound to call again upon the ward(s)/constituencies to elect their representatives until it is satisfied that if called upon again, there will be no such failure on the parts of the ward(s)/constituencies,” the release added. On Friday too, hundreds of volunteers comprising of All Wards Union and the four land-owner villages of Mokokchung town were posted at the DC office premise to prevent intending candidates from filing their nomination papers for the MMC election, slated for October 10. It may be mentioned the general public of sixteen wards and four landowner villages of Mokokchung town had in a joint meeting on September 13, resolved to boycott the MMC election and to banish from Mokokchung town any person filing nomination papers.
