In another confrontation between IRB personnel and NSCN (I-M) activists in the State capital this month, shopkeepers downed their shutters and public were driven into a state of panic when the IRB jawans and NSCN (I-M) activists braced for a possible showdown at New NST area in the heart of Kohima, Wednesday. Police said some armed NSCN (IM) activists were seen moving in New NST area Wednesday around 11 a.m, and so police and IRB asked the activists to vacate the area since the area was thronging with civilians and their presence was a threat to the peace and security. However, the NSCN (I-M) activists were initially hesitant to vacate the area, leading to a stand-off that lasted for nearly half an hour, police said. On the other hand, NSCN (I-M) officials have blamed the IRB personnel for aggravating the situation. NSCN (I-M) officials alleged that even as their men were leaving the area as directed by police, some IRB jawans started chasing the NSCN ( I-M) activists, leading to the stand-off. It may be recalled earlier on September 2 last in the same area, IRB personnel and NSCN (IM) activists confronted each other. Police said IRB patrol party accosted a person moving about in a suspicious manner at around 10:45 a.m and interrogated him, which led to the standoff lasting for about half an hour.
