Media in Manipur continue to be under constant threat even as a local scribe was assaulted Friday night by IRB personnel. The scribe identified as one Kheda, working as a reporter in a local daily, Sanaleibak was returning home with four other reporters of the same daily when IRB personnel on duty at Khoyathong stopped them and assaulted him at around 11 pm. IRB personnel on duty assaulted the scribe even after the group identified themselves as journalists coming back from work. Scribes on Saturday gathered at Manipur Press Club to demand appropriate action against the erring personnel. An emergency meeting was held today after the scribes brought the incident to the notice of the editors and functionaries of the All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union. The meeting discussed on the repeated harassment meted out to the scribes by the security personnel deployed in and around Imphal city round the clock. Journalists complained of frequent harassment from the IRB personnel who allegedly performed duty under the influence of alcohol most of the time. The meeting however could not arrive at a decision for future course of action against the personnel involved. But they were considering pressing the state government to take up appropriate measures to punish the erring personnel so as to avoid repeating such incident in the future. The meeting came in the wake of newspaper hawkers observing strike work over the killing of one of its colleague Wednesday night by a combined security force who claimed it to be a case of encounter. Newspaper distribution in the state was severely hit as hawkers did not turn up to collect newspapers in the morning. Complaints on non-availably of newspapers poured into media houses while many turned up personally and collected newspapers as they were not aware of the sudden development of the hawkers stand.
