World Tourism Day observed

World Tourism Day was observed at the Directorate of Tourism Nagaland, Kohima on September 27 under the theme "tourism responding to the challenge of climate change". Speaking on the significance of the theme, Deputy Director, Tourism, K.T. Thomas said that human beings are responsible for climate change and global warming and its hazardous causes and effects on the planet earth. He said that cutting down of trees, burning too much of fossil fuels and use of air conditioner should be discouraged as they contribute towards pollution, depletes o-zone layer which effects human lives due to rising of temperature, he added. Stating that the effects of ecological problems leads to the influx of refugees, which invariably promotes unemployment, frustration, violence etc, he said that the world would be a better place 'if each one of us do our own bit in our own small way.' Saying that jhumming is harmful for the environment, he suggested alternate measures like agro-forestry, horticulture, medicinal plants and further said that the use of firewood should be reduced and natural vegetation should be preserved for ecological balance citing an example of Khonoma which encourage eco-tourism. He called upon the media to do their part and encouraged particularly the youths that they should live a happy life by doing something about climate change. He called upon everybody to think globally and act locally. Earlier there was an essay competition on the year's theme 'Tourism responding to the challenge of climate change' in which Sony Kumari from Mt. Sinai School bagged the first prize while Noune Khamo also from Mt. Sinai School and Rokovino Lhoushe from Dainty Buds' School bagged the second and third prize respectively. The winners and all other participants were given cash prizes. Official bulletin stated that the function was chaired by V. Doulo who also delivered the speech of the General Secretary, United Nations World Tourism Organization, (UNWTO) 'Francesco Frangible', invocation prayer was led by N. Temsu Aier and vote of thanks was pronounced by Akhale Vizol. Meanwhile, Nagaland Tourism Association celebrated World Tourism Day at Mon town Council hall on September 27 under the theme 'Responding to the challenge of Climate Change'. MLA & Chairman, Marcofed & Chairman, DPDB Mon, C.L. John graced the occasion as chief guest. In his speech he thanked the Nagaland Tourism Association for conducting World Tourism Day at Mon, he also added that this auspicious day is being observed all over the world. Deputy Commissioner, Mon, Dinesh, IAS and Vice President, Konyak Union also spoke on the occasion. Official bulletin stated that earlier the programme commenced with a prayer by Associate Pastor, KBC Mon and followed by presidential address from Neisatuo Keditsu. Other highlights of the programme were cultural presentation by Shangnyu Cultural troupe and special number by Konjong School Mon. The function was chaired by Kechangulie Kense and vote of thanks was proposed by Veluzo Tetso. Public leaders, NGOs and officials of Mon town attended the function and the event was managed by Mon Town Students Union.
