Meghalaya police is on a manhunt to arrest a son of an employee of the Atomic Mineral Division (AMD) on charges of selling “uranium ore” to people, a police official said today. So far, the state police has nabbed four persons and seized packets of suspected uranium from their possession from Mairang village in West Khasi Hills district. District Superintendent of Police, H Kharkrang said that the packets were supplied by John Khongmin, who is the son of an employee working in the AMD, to the arrested persons. In the recent months, the state police have arrested people trying to sell uranium in a packet having the caption of AMD and Government of India. “We are tracing John Khongmin to find out these packets have been smuggled out from the AMD office,” Kharkrang said. “This time our investigation will not only centre on this particular case but will try and unravel whether packet with the seal of AMD and Government of India are freely available in the market,” the SP said. In fact, Shillong police had arrested five persons in May this year when they were trying to sell a kilogram of “yellow cake” at Rs. 26 lakhs to a police decoy in Shillong. Meanwhile, the four arrested persons have been identified as Samuel Nongmalieh, Jlington Starwell Kharjahrin, Dispillar Iawphniaw and Starwell Kurbah.
