Training on Organic Farming in North East

Central Institute of Horticulture (CIH) Medziphema, Nagaland in its effort to promote capacity building in organic farming and certification has sponsored ICCOA (International Competence Centre for Organic Agriculture), Bangalore to conduct Workshop Cum Training Programme on Organic farming and Certification in all the 8 States of NE Region. In the first phase, the programme was conducted in Nagaland and Manipur. In the second phase, workshop cum training programme was conducted at Guwahati from September 2 to 4. The inaugural function was addressed by Pramila Rani Brahma, Minister of Assam, who remarked on the need for reduction on the use of inorganic fertilizers inorder to minimize adverse effect of chemical fertilizers on soil and to have quality produce with an aim of having sustainable crop production through Organic farming. According to a release issued by the CIH, Medziphema, Dr. Debaswar Bora, Chairman of Agriculture Marketing Board, Dr. M. Kalita, Secretary Horticulture. Dr. H.J. Baruah, Director Horticulture also spoke at the inaugural function held on September 2 at 10 am in the Conference Hall of Agricultural Marketing Board. Altogether 56 persons including officers from Agriculture and Horticulture Department, NGOs, entrepreneurs participated in the Programme. Similar programme was conducted in Mizoram from September 4 to 6 at the Conference hall, Directorate of Agriculture. The programme was inaugurated by T. Sangkunga, Joint Secretary, Agriculture. 42 persons including officers from Dept. of Agriculture, NGO and entrepreneurs, participated in this Workshop. The Second phase of the last programme was conducted at Shillong from September 8-10 at the Conference Hall of the Directorate of Agriculture where the programme was inaugurated by V.S. Oberoi, APC & Principal Scientist. Various topics on the importance, progress and development of Organic agriculture, Emerging opportunities, Export marketing, Crop, Soil and Nutrient management, Pest and Disease management, Certification were discussed. 40 persons from Agriculture and Horticulture Department, NGOs, entrepreneurs participated in the Programme. The third phase of the Workshop Cum Training Programme on Organic farming and Certification will be held at Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim and Tripura in the near future.
